From June 1-June 4, over 200 participants representing the majority of states in the US, including Hawaii, attended the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education (NASDTEC) at the Westin Hotel in Providence Rhode Island.
Alternative routes to teacher certification was a big focus of the conference. Examples of other topics discussed included interstate teacher mobility, recruiting highly effective teachers, school reform, and how the aftermath of hurricane Katrina affected education in New Orleans' schools.
Class Measures presented the details of its Performance Review Program for Initial Licensure (PRPIL), an alternative route to teacher certification offered in Massachusetts on behalf of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). In its fourth year of operation, the program has grown from an initial enrollment of 25 teachers to over 300 teachers this year. Enrollment in the program has doubled since 2005, and school districts from across the state have teachers enrolled in the program. A number of states expressed interest in the PRPIL program and the session was well attended.
The PRPIL program is a portfolio-based program. Class Measures instructional consultants and mentors from the teachers’ district provide direction and assistance to the teachers during the term of the program, both in the portfolio development process and through observing the teacher in the classroom.
“This is a cutting edge program,” said Peter Davies, President of Class Measures. “States need to do all they can to recruit teachers to the profession in a non-traditional manner. Alternative certification routes can be used to accommodate individuals who come to the teaching profession later in life.”
In addition to the PRPIL program, Class Measures offers numerous educational services to schools and schools districts, such as accountability system design, leadership development and coaching, and school district and charter school inspections and audits.
